The free New York daily newspapers (namely amNY & Metro) both feature articles about Willard “Mitt” Romney’s speech yesterday regarding his Mormon faith and the potential role it would (or would not) play in a Romney Administration (queue the laugh track). The strange thing about these articles is that it makes no reference to how Romney blatantly panders to the religious right by arguing for the importance, no – necessity, of religion in politics. Again, I sample my position from The Rachel Maddow Show and her conversation with the Rev. Welton Gaddy, but the point made is an extremely valid one on more than one level.
Unfortunately, immediate comparisons were made to JFK’s now famous 1960 speech regarding his belief that religion is a personal matter; it should not be the basis for a voter’s decision and most importantly, politics do not and should not mix. He even went on to state that if the potential of a conflict occurring between the Catholic Church and the USA, he would recuse himself and resign. Mitt did no such thing and continued to toe the ridiculous party line that the Christian God must play a significant role in everything one does: ''When I place my hand on the Bible and take the oath of office, that oath becomes my highest promise to God.'' Ummm, Mitt? That oath is actually to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States of America.
