To expand upon the brief comment I made in regards to the story regarding Pastor Dr. Jeremiah Wright; this is without question a reprehensible hit job, likely perpetrated by at least one of two political opponents. Regardless of who raked up this muck, the fact that Senator Obama is held to a different standard regarding which religious leaders endorse him, versus who endorses Senators McCain or Clinton reeks of hypocrisy. To the best of my knowledge, there have not been many significant religious supporters of Mrs. Clinton; while Mr. McCain has stopped just short of attempting to raise Jerry Falwell from the grave and garnering his support (despite having called him, among other prominent evangelical leaders, an agent of intolerance). John Hagee of San Antonio, TX and Don Parsley of Columbus, OH are two immensely (and regrettably) powerful pastors with the power to bring out the flocks in droves to vote for the ‘more Christian candidate’. Hagee proclaimed Katrina was brought upon by a super-duper sexy gay pride parade that was scheduled to occur the day the hurricane hit and that the Catholic Church is the whore of Christianity; thankfully McCain at least denounced the second claim – that is if anyone found it to be offensive. Parsley is arguably even more of a peach; he has written that the prophet Mohammed mistook the devil for God and therefore Islam is inherently evil. Thus it is the obligation of Christians to wipe Muslims off the face of the earth. How’s THAT for intolerance! As noted on Monday by Rachel Maddow and her guest David Korn (sp?) of Mother Jones, the difference in this instance between Obama and McCain is that the former did not actively seek out the endorsements of Louis Farrakhan and Dr. Wright. Another difference is that while as incendiary as Dr. Wright’s comments were, they are actually rooted in a great deal of truth. America is not exactly known for its peachy keen historical relationship with Afrian-Americans, nor is it known for its abstinence from meddling in the affairs of foreign countries (especially middle-eastern ones). Saying “God Damn America” however seems to offend Americans more often than not. In other news, our economy is screwed.
