The senate at least has something of an excuse for not getting as much done as they would like, as they only hold a very slim majority; the house, however, is very comfortably democratic and should thus be the forum where the proverbial balls are gotten rolling. This is evidenced particularly in the case of former Supreme Court Justice Nominee, Harriet E. Miers, and the House Subcommittee on Commercial & Administrative Law voting to begin contempt proceedings against her for defying the subpoena issued to her.
This administration and its officials, both past and present, are not at all accustomed in being compelled to abide by the laws that govern the rest of the American people, so they are understandably a little miffed at such developments. In all seriousness though, if this does not demonstrate the utter and total lack of respect the neocons have for the United States people and the democratic system, then I don’t know what does. So things are starting to fall apart for the Bushies, this much is for sure. The main question now is can they play keep away long enough to run out the clock on their second disastrous term in office.
The GOP pols (the senators in particular) are gradually starting to give, i.e. in their own very self-serving way, i.e. the ones who are up for re-election in 2008, i.e. Domenici, Lugar, etc. etc. On the other end of the spectrum, you have senators who have already been re-elected and now feel free to do whatever they can to wreak havoc upon general decency. Take Joseph I. LIEberman for example… Being a well decorated military man himself, Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) introduced legislation the other day that would ensure that servicemen and women who served abroad for a year were subsequently given a year at home to recuperate; reservists would be given three years. So which republican in independent’s clothing proceeded to filibuster this bill? You guessed it! Senator LIEberman himself. There’s this great picture in The New York Times today that has some of the usual GOP senatorial suspects in the foreground with LIEberman looking on in the background, virtually pleading them, “Hey, can I play with you guys? Can I, Can I, Can I?!” Silly Joe, if you hadn’t already noticed, you have to at least pretend to support the troops if you wanna be a republican! You’re on the right track, but you still got a long way to go, bubulah!
